The 3 Best Home Styles In The Denver Metro

Are you looking to buy a new home and wonder what style of house you should buy? In this video, we're going to talk about three of the most popular home styles right here in the Denver Metro: the Victorian, Denver Foursquare, and Craftsman Bungalow. We'll take a look at the unique characteristics of each style so you can choose the one that fits you best.

Denver's Most Popular Home Styles

If you’re looking for Denver, Colorado houses for sale, you'll want to hear about these home styles. Even if you’re in a different area of the country, these designs are most likely available in your neck of the woods as well.  And one of the cool things about these three styles of homes is that they are not new builds.

These home styles aren't that contemporary look you’re seeing pop up along the Denver Metro area. Even when I was traveling to Chicago and Charleston on a road trip earlier this spring, I saw new builds popping up all over the place - and they all kind of look the same. The cool thing about these three styles of homes is that they have plenty of character.

There's also a possibility that these styles might have a little bit of a rundown feel to them. So if you’re looking for a way to build up your equity and net worth, finding that diamond in the rough can be a great option. If you don't mind rolling up your sleeves and doing a little grunt work, you can turn one of these older-style properties into the house of your dreams. All the property may need is a little bit of love and compassion.

The Victorian

Victorian homes are a little bit older, which means they have great character. Because they were built so well, they've stood the test of time. Named after royalty, some Victorians seem to cost that much as well. Built between 1890 and 1930, these beautiful homes are large and typically identified by vibrant colors. They usually have two or three stories, not including a basement.

Victorians typically have an expansive first-story wraparound porch, while roofs tend to be highly pitched and very decorative. This decoration is usually referred to as the "gingerbread trim." The interiors of these homes are extremely cinematic so that you kind of feel like you’re in a movie theater. Of course, like so many of these older homes, they were built with different styles.

Victorian layouts were a little more closed off and not quite as open, which could be a challenge for those homes that haven’t been renovated yet. If you traveled around Denver, you’re gonna see quite a few Victorians in Highlands, Wash Park, West, Curtis, Baker, and Capitol Hill.

The Denver Foursquare

The next home type is known across America as the American Foursquare. Here in Denver, though, we call them Denver Foursquare. These homes were built between 1890 and about 1950 and typically feature a cubic-shaped floorplan. They’re divided by quarters on each floor, and most of these Squares are two to two and a half stories. Some have basements and some might not.

Denver Foursquares feature a low-pitched roof with a deep overhang and a boxy shape. They tend to have a large front patio that spans the width of the house and a central dormer with a window. Like our Victorians, they tend to have sort of a strange floorplan because everything’s closed off. Again, unless they’re not renovated, it’s going to be a little challenging because everything’s boxed off and it’s not very open. You often have a weird staircase in the middle of the house, which kind of cuts off some of the space.

If you’re on a budget, these are probably the types of homes you’re going to look for to find a good deal. It will allow you to put some money into renovations, such as opening up the kitchen into the living room where you can see the family and spend more time in the same room. You're going to find quite a few Denver Foursquares in Cheesman Park, West Highland, and Park Hill.

Craftsman Bungalow

Number three on the list is my personal favorite: the Craftsman Bungalow. These are extremely popular in Denver and became popular around the turn of the century in the 1900s. They were the perfect option for people who were looking for modest living in an affordable home at the time.

Not only are these some of my favorite homes but they're also some of the most popular homes in all of Denver. They were built well - hence the term 'Craftsman.' Standing the test of time, these handcrafted houses are identified by their low profile, low pitched roof with broad eaves, large front porch, wooden accents and trim, and an open floor plan. The best feature (in my opinion) is the exposed brick on the outside and some on the inside of these beautifully crafted homes.

The challenge here isn't the openness. Rather, it's that these homes were built so close to other homes back in the day. You might be about seven or eight feet away from your neighbor. Also, they didn’t need as much storage space as we do today when this style of home was first made. So don’t expect extra closet space. You might have tighter corridors with doors, showers, and bathrooms not being quite as big as you like.

Craftsman Bungalow homes are all over Denver Metro, though you'll mostly find them in West Highlands, Park Hill, City park, and Congress in Platte Park.

Beautiful Homes In The Denver Metro

I hope this helped give you an idea of the best home styles that the Denver Metro has to offer. The great thing about Denver Metro is that we are talking about the city and these hoods that are just surrounding the city. The area has that city feel while larger houses have more of a suburban feel. This means you get the benefit of being in the city while enjoying tons of character in these three styles of homes.

So if you want to find a beautiful, well-built property, you won't go wrong with these styles. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out and I'll be happy to guide you.
